When Philadelphia painter Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) created his work Sailing in 1874, the small, lone figure in a boat at sunset would likely have been gliding along on the Delaware or Schuylkill rivers near Philadelphia. His realist inclinations sometimes compelled him to make models of his subjects as part of his studies, to ensure that he understood, for instance, the mechanics of the boats and how they would act on the water, and to be accurate about their shapes and riggings.
A century and half later, contemporary Philadelphia painter Tom Judd (b. 1952) had a similar inclination—to make replicas of some of his favorite paintings, including Sailing, to see what he could learn from each of the artists. //
